Benefits & Entitlements

The most common financial supports that may be available to carers and/or those cared-for in Ireland are the Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, Respite Care Grant and Disability Allowance.

Carer's Allowance

The Carer’s Allowance is a payment to people who are looking after a person who needs support because of age, physical or learning disability or illness (including mental illness) .

Rates

Your payment is made up of a personal rate for yourself and extra amounts for any child dependants. Carer’s Allowance has no qualified adult payment.

You may claim a full-rate increase in your payment for a child dependant if you are a carer and are single, widowed, separated or a civil partner who is not living with the other civil partner. You may claim a half-rate increase in your payment for a child dependant if you are a carer and are living with your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant

Carer's Benefit

Carer’s Benefit is a payment made to insured persons in Ireland who leave the workforce to care for a person(s) in need of full-time care and attention.

Respite Care Grant

The Respite Care Grant is an annual payment for carers who look after certain people in need of full-time care and attention.  The Grant of €1,375 is paid once each year, usually on the first Thursday in June, for each person you are caring for. It is not taxable.
